DIFFERENCE and DEFERENCE (2018)

This series of brass repousse' works was exhibited during the Annual Philippine Studies Conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

This exhibit referenced some examples of Northern Luzon Cordillera material culture in contemporary articulations of lowland folk crafts. Repoussé (embossed metal) Catholic sacramentals are a major influence on Carvajal's art practice. He also sees Cordillera tattoo and textile motifs as texts, and as such, they can be
“verbalized” and transmitted through other means. By adopting some of these motifs to
repoussé works, new meanings and readings can surface, informed by evolving ways of living in the present era.
